Data Dictionary

The following is a list of the file field codes used in the Database Format (.dbf) files containing Generalized CDC species Element Occurrence Records. For further information on the codes and/or their definitions, or for any questions concerning Atlantic CDC element occurrence data, contact Michael Elliott or Adam Durocher.

  • COCODE: County code
  • ELCODE: Element code, used by conservation data centres and NatureServe
  • FAMILY: Family to which species belongs
  • GNAME: Global scientific name of species
  • GCOMNAME: Global common name of species (English only)
  • GRANK: Global rarity rank of species, using CDC/NatureServe methods
  • NRANK: National rarity rank of species, using CDC/NatureServe methods
  • NPROT: National conservation status of species, as designated by COSEWIC
  • SRANK: Sub-national rarity rank of species, using CDC/NatureServe methods
  • SPROT: Sub-national conservation status of species, as designated by given provincial jurisdiction
  • FIRSTOBS: Date of first observation of species at the given locale, as recorded by the Atlantic CDC
  • LASTOBS: Date of last observation of species at the given locale, as recorded by the Atlantic CDC
  • CORECS: Number of records/taxa in the county, as maintained by the Atlantic CDC
  • CITATION: Summary citation information i.e., sources behind the records
